Bust of Michelangelo, by Daniele Ricciarelli, after the antique Bronze-effect patina gypsum plaster cast from the original mould by the Gipsoteca Nazionale di Firenze

79cm high, 63cm wide, 60cm deep

  • Notes: Note: Daniele da Volterra was an Italian painter and sculptor known best for his finely drawn and highly idealised figures done in the style of Michelangelo While working in Rome he became a pupil and close friend of Michelangelo. Using his death mask as his model, Daniele made a bronze portrait bust of Michelangelo which has become the finest surviving representation of the great Renaissance Master. It is considered to portray an accurate likeness of Michelangelo’s physical attributes as well as being a thrilling portrait of the soul Sadly, Daniele earned the nickname of Il Braghettone (The Breeches Maker) when in 1559 Pope Paul IV assigned him the task of painting draperies over the figures in Michelangelo’s Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel to cover their nudity.
