OTHER NOTES
Walter Withers' contribution to Australian Art was as a leading figure in the 'Heidelberg School'. His paintings, however, conjure the Neo Romantic lyrical moods of nature. It is the Impressionism of Monet. In a sense they were decadents, for they persisted in rendering nature suffused with soft romantic haze. Such painting has often been described as an endeavour to capture the 'spirit' of the landscape, 'the meaning within the meaning', not to record its anatomy but to portray its soul. Bernard Smith (on gallery label affixed verso)

  • Condition: There is no significant creasing / perforations to the paper. The watercolour appears to have retained most of its original vibrancy. Scattered areas of discolouration / dirt marks. No visible, obvious foxing. The work is framed, mounted and glazed and in very good, original condition.
